The Ashida Laboratory conducts research in the field of automatic control and related areas.
The word “control” can have a broad range of meanings, but in our research, it refers to making a certain “output” match a desired “target value.” Autonomous driving is a good example of a technology that relies heavily on control engineering. For instance, a vehicle can steer itself so that the “center position of the car” stays aligned with the “center of the road.” At the same time, it can control the accelerator so that the “vehicle speed” matches the “target speed.”
Control technology is used in many things around us, but its true potential is especially evident in industry. It is used, for example, to control robotic arms and to regulate temperatures in food manufacturing processes. Improving these control systems can reduce unnecessary energy consumption, lower manufacturing costs, and lessen environmental impact, among many other benefits.
Our research generally follows these steps:
Develop a new control method or improve an existing one.
Perform computer simulations.
Conduct experiments using experimental equipment.
Depending on the research topic, the developed control method may even be implemented in actual products or facilities.
